| Judith Butler Dear Marja, Such a full sadness came over me as I read these words. Niels was so very lucky to have such a friend in you - that much is utterly clear. He was, as I knew him, a gentle and just person. I was moved and honored that he wanted me to write a new preface to Excitable Speech. When he wrote to me he made clear what the relation could be between my book and the political situation in the Netherlands. He was shrewd, kind, careful, and just - I keep coming back to that word. I am so very sorry for your loss, and for the loss that so many people must now be registering with whatever resources they have. Such a kind man, and a good person. I knew him only briefly, but his letters to me were so thoughtful and perspicacious. And I was profoundly honored by him, and he impressed me as a person of enormous gentleness. I know that he loved his work, that he cared about language, that one had to be careful with it, and that it carried possibilities of both precision and force. It is good that you celebrate this life, but also, please, continue his fine work. I am sad on this night, and so sorry that I did not have more time to know him well. What I knew compelled my affection and respect - and he was, as a light on this earth, a beautiful surprise. please accept my embrace during this difficult time and allow yourself to be surrounded by good friends. warmly, Judith |
